It’s not too late for spring cleaning!
I know, summer starts tomorrow, but hear me out…
You could tackle your junk drawer tonight. Or, why not let the screwdriver, stamps, and safety pins coexist and save that energy for cleaning up your mind instead?
We think thousands of thoughts every day, most on repeat. Maybe as soon as you wake up your brain says, “Crap, I’m running late… no time for breakfast…” You rush to get ready and leave the house hungry and frustrated with yourself for not planning better.
Sure, getting up earlier could help, but what if you didn’t believe your brain when it says, “there is no time”? Maybe there is time for breakfast. Maybe not for perfect huevos rancheros, but how about a smoothie, avocado toast, or a banana?
This is the beauty of questioning repetitive thoughts. You give yourself more options!
What thought has been hogging space in your mental junk drawer?
“I don’t know.”
“I’m awful at making decisions.”
“I’m not smart enough.”
“There’s too much to do.”
My challenge to you is to pick one thought that you don’t want to carry into summer and start cleaning it up with three simple steps:
Notice when it pops up.
Remind yourself that the thought is just a sentence in your brain. It is not the truth of the universe.
Instead of asking yourself the normal self defeating retort ask yourself a more useful question. For example: Instead of "Why can't I ever figure this out?" to "Am I actually late?" or "What do I have time for?" or "Do I even want breakfast?"
Every time your brain offers you that familiar thought - repeat this process. Notice, remind yourself this may not be true, and ask yourself a useful question.
I would love to know how this goes for you. Reply back and let me know what thought you are weeding out!
Happy spring cleaning,
Missy
