Your next chance to pursue happiness starts… now
I've been thinking a lot this weekend about the pursuit of happiness this holiday weekend.
The unalienable right that was declared in the Declaration of Independence in 1776 was not happiness. It was the pursuit of happiness.
The pursuit.
Sitting around and waiting to feel the feelings we're craving won't get us very far.
Peace. Love. Happiness. Security. Connection.
It's our job, our privilege, to go after them. To bring them to life!
And every day, every hour, every minute we get another chance to create our own happiness.
I truly get it. Sometimes it feels impossible.
Someone you love passes.
You fall sick.
Your job hunt isn't going to plan.
And you may have moments during the hard times when you want to pause the pursuit.
Totally allowed.
Pause when you need to. Feel all the feels.
And, always remember you're allowed to feel more than one thing at the same time.
You can be scared and happy. In love and sad. Or grateful and grieving, as my friend and I discussed this weekend.
But the important thing is you have a choice.
You always. Always. Have the choice to pursue happiness.
This lesson hit home for me when I read the incredible book, The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson. Highly recommend!
In it, Larson paints the most vivid picture of Winston Churchill's daughter, Mary, dancing at the underground dance clubs throughout the Blitz.
Talk about the pursuit of happiness!
Or, consider Viktor Frankl pursuing meaning in the most unbearable conditions as he outlines in, Man's Search for Meaning.
Now, those may be an extreme examples, but if you've been waiting for happiness or purpose to come your way, consider... what if the pursuit itself is where the magic lives?
And what if all that is required is starting where you are?
In the life you're already living?
This week, try zooming in for a bit.
Catch yourself smiling at the chirping birds. Allow yourself that extra coffee you truly desire. Gift yourself another minute of peace in that final tree pose before stepping off the mat.
Every bit counts. And you can always expand the pursuit from there there!
